Distillation Service

Short-path wiped film distillation (SPWED), sometimes referred to as molecular distillation, is a process that creates a high purity, odor-free clear distillate from concentrates extracted from hemp or cannabis. The percentage of Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and Cannabidiol (CBD) in the distillate depends on the strain, quality, and age of the starting material.  Starting materials are typically extracts from natural hydrocarbon (“BHO”) or supercritical carbon dioxide extraction. After extraction, the raw oil is typically winterized to remove fats and lipids and other impurities, and then decarboxylated to release carbon dioxide. Once this is done, the oil is ready for purification in the SPWED. More details are provided on our service page.



Advantages of Our Short-Path Wiped Film Distillation (SPWFD) System 

  • High purity (85-90%) distillate
  • Little to no odor or smell (perfect for edibles)
  • Little product degradation [due to short residence time (<10 seconds) and low temperature]
  • Precise temperature control (within 0.1 degree Celsius)
  • Interruptible vacuum (you can process different oils without breaking vacuum)

Disadvantages of Convention Short Path Distillation

  • Long residence time (which can degrade or oxidize product)
  • High temperature
  • Slow processing rate
  • Continuous vacuum (you can't collect the oil until you have stopped the distillation process)
